Chapter 8 - The Truth in the Dark

Nico kept his heavy weapon leveled perfectly at the center of Norah's chest.

His dark eyes were completely devoid of the protective warmth she had once known and loved.

He demanded to know exactly why she stole the master ledger to betray him.

Norah held the blinking microchip up in the damp air with violently trembling hands.

She desperately explained that Marcus planted it on her, and that Arthur was trying to kill her to cover his massive theft.

Nico took a slow, highly calculated step forward into the dim light.

He coldly told her that she was a brilliant, manipulative liar.

He reminded her bitterly that she had packed her bags and walked out on him without a second thought.

Norah refused to back down or beg for mercy.

She told him fiercely that she left because he had proudly announced to his crew that she meant absolutely nothing to him.

Nico physically flinched, the painful memory of his own arrogant words striking him like a hammer.

He finally lowered his weapon by a single, hesitant inch.

He quietly asked her to hand over the chip so he could verify her impossible story.

Norah slowly reached her hand out across the empty space between them.

Before Nico could take the microchip, a deafening gunshot echoed violently through the underground tunnel.

Nico jolted forward as a massive spray of blood erupted from his right shoulder.

He collapsed heavily onto the cold, wet concrete floor.

Arthur stepped out of the deep shadows with a smoking pistol tightly gripped in his hand.
