Chapter 4 - The Diner on the Edge

Norah woke up with a blinding headache and the taste of blood in her mouth.

She was tightly bound to a metal chair in the back of a moving cargo van.

She remembered Marcus betraying her and injecting her with a powerful sedative.

She quickly realized Marcus must have sold her out to the Romano syndicate for a massive payday.

The heavy van hit a massive pothole, causing the vehicle to swerve violently across the road.

She heard the masked driver cursing loudly in rapid Italian.

Norah used the sharp metal edge of her chair to desperately saw through her thick plastic zip-ties.

She waited in agonizing silence until the van slowed down at a rural railroad crossing.

She kicked the back doors open with all her strength and tumbled out onto the hard asphalt.

She rolled aggressively into the deep grass and hid just as the van screeched to a halt.

Two armed men jumped out with heavy flashlights and began sweeping the area.

They walked directly toward the thorny bushes where she was holding her breath.

Suddenly, blinding headlights washed over the scene as a massive semi-truck barreled down the dark road.

The truck driver blasted his air horn, distracting the hitmen just long enough for Norah to sprint into the dense woods.

She ran for miles until she saw the flickering neon sign of an isolated diner.

She walked inside, completely soaked in mud, and begged the lonely waitress to use the phone.

The waitress did not hand her the phone, but instead stared at her in absolute horror.

She pointed a trembling finger at the small television screen mounted above the counter.

Norah looked up and saw a picture of her own face flashing on the breaking news broadcast.

The headline stated she was a dangerous fugitive and the prime suspect in the brutal murder of a homeless man.
