Chapter 2 - The Cold Rain

Norah shivered violently as the freezing rain soaked through her thin sweater.
She had found the hidden tracker inside her coat lining three weeks ago.
She always knew Nico was a man who never truly trusted anyone in his life.
She had given the expensive coat to a shivering homeless man just to buy herself a few hours of freedom.
She never imagined that her simple act of misdirection would cost an innocent man his life.
She walked into a cheap, neon-lit motel and paid for a room using the cash she had saved.
She locked the flimsy wooden door and collapsed onto the stiff mattress.
She knew she needed a completely new identity if she ever wanted to disappear from Nico's radar.
She pulled out a prepaid burner phone and dialed a number she swore she would never call again.
A man named Marcus answered the phone on the third ring.
Marcus was a ghost from her past, a professional forger she knew long before she ever met the mafia boss.
He listened to her desperate plea and told her to meet him at the old shipping yards in exactly one hour.
Norah put her wet shoes back on and navigated the dark transit system to reach the docks.
She arrived at the designated warehouse and found Marcus waiting alone in the deep shadows.
He smiled warmly at her and stepped forward to pull her into a comforting hug.

Norah finally let her guard down, allowing herself to feel safe for the first time in hours.
Then she felt the sharp, terrifying prick of a needle plunging deep into the side of her neck.
