Chapter 5 - The Crosshairs

Norah stared at the television screen in total disbelief.

She knew instantly that Nico had used his corrupt police contacts to frame her for the murder.

He understood that triggering a nationwide manhunt was the fastest way to force her out of hiding.

The terrified diner waitress slowly backed away and reached beneath the wooden counter.

Norah knew the woman was either reaching for a panic button or a hidden shotgun.

She turned around and sprinted back out the front doors into the freezing, relentless rain.

She ran toward a rusted pickup truck parked carelessly behind the diner's dumpster.

The keys were miraculously dangling from the ignition in the empty cabin.

She threw herself into the driver's seat and slammed her foot onto the gas pedal.

She sped down the empty rural highway, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She desperately needed to find a safe place before the local police established heavily armed roadblocks.

A pair of blinding LED headlights suddenly appeared in her cracked rearview mirror.

A massive black SUV was gaining on her at a terrifying, unnatural speed.

The vehicle aggressively pulled up directly beside her driver's side window.

The tinted passenger window of the SUV slowly rolled down.

Arthur, Nico's trusted underboss, was sitting in the passenger seat holding a suppressed sniper rifle.

He aimed the long black barrel directly at the center of Norah's forehead.
