Chapter 10 - The False Victory
The heavily armed Romano soldiers instantly opened fire on Arthur's completely surprised men.
The underground tunnel erupted into a chaotic, deafening warzone of flying concrete and lethal crossfire.
Arthur screamed in pure agony as a high-caliber sniper round completely shattered his kneecap.
He fell hard to the floor, dropping his weapon and leaving himself completely defenseless.
Nico used the chaotic distraction to drag himself forward and grab his discarded gun.
He aimed carefully and fired a single, fatal shot directly into Arthur's chest.
The traitor collapsed backward onto the cold tracks and stopped moving forever.
Nico dropped the heavy gun and pulled Norah into a desperate, bone-crushing embrace.
He buried his face deeply in her hair, completely ignoring the warm blood pouring down his injured shoulder.
He wept quietly, telling her he was so incredibly sorry for his arrogance and everything he had said.
He fiercely promised he would burn the world down before he ever let her go again.
The Romano soldiers quickly finished wiping out the remaining pockets of Arthur's loyal men.
The gunfire finally ceased, leaving the destroyed tunnel wrapped in an eerie, ringing silence.
Nico held Norah tightly against his chest, truly believing the horrible nightmare was finally over.
He had his beautiful queen back in his arms, and his criminal empire was completely purged of traitors.
Norah smiled warmly and gently stroked the back of his neck with her soft fingers.
She leaned in close and whispered that she was so very glad he came for her.
Then, she smoothly pressed the cold, steel barrel of a small revolver directly against his spine.
Nico froze instantly, his heartbeat stopping completely inside his chest.
Victor Romano stepped forward from the crowd of heavily armed soldiers and bowed deeply respectfully to Norah.

Norah looked down at Nico with eyes that were completely dead and devoid of any love.
She told him she had never loved him, and that her real name was Sofia Romano.
