Chapter 4 - The Microchip

The giant Cane Corso slammed into the hitman with the force of a freight train.

The heavy assault rifle was knocked violently from the masked man's hands.

Titan clamped his powerful jaws down on the assassin's shoulder.

The man screamed in sheer agony, fighting desperately to throw the massive dog off his body.

Marin pressed herself against the wall, entirely paralyzed by the brutal violence unfolding before her.

Suddenly, two rapid gunshots echoed through the narrow hallway.

Dorian Vance stepped out of the shadows with a smoking pistol in his hand.

He had personally followed the escort vehicle, trusting his instincts that a trap had been laid.

The hitman went completely limp and collapsed onto the bloodstained carpet.

Dorian quickly whistled, and Titan released the dead man to stand protectively over Marin.

Dorian reached down and helped the hyperventilating widow to her feet.

"I told you it wasn't safe," he whispered, quickly checking her for injuries.

He picked her up effortlessly and carried her down the stairs to his waiting armored car.

They drove through the dark streets of Chicago until they reached Dorian's fortress-like mansion on the lake.

He brought her into a massive, luxurious bedroom and called for his private doctor.

While the doctor bandaged the scrapes on her arms, Dorian sat in a chair studying Daniel's watch.

Marin had dropped the broken timepiece during the terrifying chaos in the hallway.

Dorian used a small pocket knife to pry off the cracked metal backing of the watch.

He suspected Daniel would never leave his wife completely defenseless without an insurance policy.

The metal casing popped open with a quiet click.

Hidden inside the intricate gears was a tiny, perfectly preserved digital microchip.

Dorian held the small piece of technology up to the dim light of the bedroom.

Marin gasped, realizing her husband had been carrying a deadly secret against his chest when he died.

Dorian looked at her with a chilling, predatory smile.

"Daniel didn't steal the money," Dorian stated confidently.
