Chapter 3 - The Ambush

Dorian stared out the massive window at the falling snow.
The execution of Garrett Boyd proved that the traitor was moving aggressively to cover their tracks.
He realized the true mastermind was trying to erase anyone connected to the missing millions.
Dorian turned his cold gaze back to the terrified widow sitting on his couch.
"If they know about Garrett, they definitely know about Daniel's surviving wife," he said.
Marin gripped the cracked wristwatch so tightly that the metal dug into her palm.
She told Dorian she just wanted to go home and forget this nightmare ever happened.
Dorian shook his head and explained that her cheap apartment was a death trap.
He ordered two of his most elite, heavily armed guards to escort her safely home.
They were instructed to pack her belongings and bring her directly back to his secure estate.
Marin rode in the back of a bulletproof SUV, praying this was all a terrible mistake.
The guards led her up the dark, flickering stairwell of her rundown apartment building.
One of the men reached out to unlock her front door.
He never even had the chance to turn the brass knob.
The wooden door violently exploded outward in a hail of automatic gunfire.
Marin screamed and fell backward onto the dirty hallway floor.
Both of Dorian's elite guards were killed instantly by the brutal ambush.
Thick smoke and the smell of gunpowder filled the narrow corridor.
Marin scrambled backward, her bad leg dragging painfully against the cheap carpet.
A tall man wearing a tactical mask stepped slowly out of her destroyed apartment.
He held a smoking assault rifle and looked down at her with absolute disgust.
"Daniel owed us five million dollars, Mrs. Caldwell," the masked man growled.
He raised the heavy weapon and aimed it directly at Marin's forehead.
She squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the deafening blast that would end her life.
Then she heard the terrifying sound of a beast roaring in the darkness.
