Chapter 2 - The Invitation

Marin could not comprehend how this terrifying criminal knew her dead husband's name.

Daniel had been a simple insurance adjuster before the hit-and-run accident took his life.

He had never mentioned knowing anyone wealthy, let alone a notorious mafia boss.

"How do you know Daniel?" Marin asked, her voice shaking violently.

Dorian did not answer her question right away.

He looked down at Titan, who was still sitting protectively by Marin's braced leg.

The dog had always possessed an uncanny ability to sense bloodlines and loyalty.

"You are coming with me to my office," Dorian commanded gently but firmly.

Marin wanted to run, but her painful leg made any escape attempt impossible.

She slowly nodded and allowed him to guide her toward his private elevator.

Titan followed closely behind them, acting as a silent, massive guardian.

The elevator shot upward to the fortieth floor with terrifying speed.

Dorian led her into a massive room overlooking the glittering skyline of Chicago.

He poured a glass of expensive bourbon and handed it to her trembling fingers.

"Your husband did not work in insurance," Dorian said bluntly.

Marin almost dropped the heavy crystal glass onto the expensive rug.

"He was the chief financial architect of my entire organization," Dorian continued.

Marin shook her head wildly, refusing to believe the man she loved was a criminal.

She insisted that Daniel was a good man who simply died in a tragic car accident.

Dorian walked to his desk and pulled out a classified police file.

He tossed the thick folder onto the coffee table in front of her.

"It was not an accident, Marin," he said softly.

He explained that someone had intentionally run Daniel off the road to silence him.

Marin felt the room spinning as the foundation of her entire reality began to collapse.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office burst open.

Dorian's head of security rushed into the room with a pale, frightened face.

"Boss, we have a massive problem," the security chief gasped out loud.

He reported that Garrett Boyd had just been found dead in a downtown alleyway.

Someone had executed the accountant mere minutes after Dorian had fired him.

Marin realized she was now trapped in the middle of a deadly mob war.

And whoever killed her husband was currently eliminating all the witnesses.
