Chapter 9 - The Final Threat

The sniper on the black motorcycle watched the ambulance speed away toward the city.
He tapped a hidden communicator inside his dark helmet.
"The primary target has been secured by federal agents," the sniper reported coldly.
A distorted voice crackled through the earpiece.
"Abort the assassination and initiate protocol zero immediately," the voice commanded.
The sniper revved his engine and disappeared completely into the rainy night.
Inside the brightly lit hospital room Arthur finally breathed a sigh of genuine relief.
Anna was resting comfortably in the hospital bed with IV fluids restoring her strength.
The young boy was fast asleep on a small couch in the corner of the private room.
Victoria stood by the window and drank a terrible cup of hospital coffee.
"Marcus will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security federal prison," Victoria confirmed.
"And the corrupt police captain has already confessed to everything to secure a plea deal."
Arthur looked at his sleeping grandson and smiled warmly.
"I am going to make sure this boy has the best life imaginable," Arthur promised softly.
Anna slowly opened her eyes and reached out to hold her father's wrinkled hand.
"I never stopped thinking about you, Dad," she whispered with tears forming again.
"I am so sorry I believed Elaine's lies about you."
Arthur kissed her forehead gently and wiped her tears away.
"The only thing that matters is that we are together now," Arthur reassured her.
The next morning the sun broke through the storm clouds and bathed the city in golden light.
Arthur formally reclaimed his position as the head of his massive corporate empire.
He immediately established a massive trust fund for his grandson to guarantee his future.
Victoria was hired as the new head of global security for the entire Pendleton corporation.
They celebrated their victory with a private dinner at the most exclusive restaurant in the city.
The young boy wore a brand new tailored suit and ate more chocolate cake than he could handle.
Anna looked healthier and happier than she had in almost a decade.
Everything had perfectly fallen into place and the nightmare was officially over.
Arthur smiled as he watched his family laughing together at the dinner table.
He excused himself for a moment to retrieve a special family heirloom from his private bank vault.

He wanted to give Anna the original diamond necklace that belonged to her late mother.
Arthur entered the highly secure bank and used his biometric scan to open his personal safety deposit box.
