Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The luxury showroom glowed with warm designer light as endless shelves of crystal dishes and porcelain sets sparkled over polished marble.

Then disaster exploded in the very first second.

A tiny boy in a torn school uniform brushed past a display while his ripped sleeve caught the fragile edge.

An entire row of crystal dishes tipped forward.

Plates shattered across the floor in a deafening cascade of expensive destruction.

Every wealthy shopper in the boutique completely froze.

The boy stumbled backward in absolute terror as his dirty face immediately crumpled into tears.

Silence slammed over the store like a heavy iron vault.

Then the manager stormed forward in her designer heels with sharp fury radiating from every step.

"Do you have any idea what you just did?" she snapped viciously.

The boy shook violently while looking at the ruin at his feet.

"I am sorry, please, I did not mean to do it," he cried.

A rich woman standing nearby scoffed loudly and crossed her arms.

"He cannot even pay for a single broken plate," the woman mocked.

Smartphones immediately began to rise from the crowd as people started recording the humiliation.

The boy clutched his tiny faded backpack tightly against his chest while sobbing uncontrollably.

"My mom said I needed to bring her medicine," he whimpered.

He opened the worn zipper of his bag with small trembling hands.

Inside the bag were just a few carefully counted coins and a folded prescription paper.

The room went completely quiet in a very different and uncomfortable way.

The manager snatched the paper angrily from his hands.

Then she stopped completely cold.

Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she read the name written on the medical slip.

Slowly and fearfully she looked back down at the weeping boy.

"Your mother is Anna?" she whispered.

The child nodded quickly and began crying even harder.

Before anyone else could speak an old man across the aisle dropped his wooden cane.

The cane hit the marble floor with a loud crack as he stepped forward in sheer disbelief.

"Anna is your mother?" the old man gasped as he clutched his chest.

The manager staggered backward and her previous anger completely vanished into thin air.

"That cannot be possible," the manager whispered with a trembling voice.

The old man ignored her completely and knelt painfully in front of the frightened boy.

"Where is your mother right now?" he asked gently.

The boy wiped his tears with his dirty and torn sleeve.

"She is waiting for me outside in the car," he answered.

The rich woman laughed nervously and rolled her eyes.

"This is absolutely ridiculous," she muttered to the crowd.

Nobody in the store joined in her cruel laughter.

The old man reached into his expensive leather wallet with visibly shaking hands.

He pulled out an old faded photograph and turned it toward the whispering crowd.

It was a picture of a beautiful young Anna standing beside him in front of this exact same store.

"She is my daughter," the old man said as his voice broke with decades of grief.

The manager turned completely pale and took another step backward.

"We were all told she died in a tragic accident years ago," the manager stammered.

The boy frowned and looked directly at the panicked woman.

"My mom said you told everyone that lie," the boy stated clearly.

The old man froze and looked between his grandson and the manager.

"Why would she say something like that?" the old man asked in confusion.

The boy pointed a tiny finger straight at the manager.

May you like

"Because she got extremely sick after you pushed her down the stairs," the boy revealed.

The crowd gasped in horror as the manager suddenly lunged forward and grabbed the boy by his throat.
