Chapter 6 - The Spark in the Dark

The shockwave of the explosion shattered the skylights and rained broken glass down upon them.
The single halogen light violently flickered and then completely died.
The entire warehouse was instantly plunged into absolute darkness.
"Do not let them move!" Marcus screamed over the ringing echoes of the blast.
Arthur did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
He tackled his daughter into the shadows beneath a rusted shipping container just as bullets began to fly.
The mercenaries fired wildly into the dark while Victoria grabbed the boy and pulled him behind a stack of wooden pallets.
"Are you hurt?" Arthur whispered frantically as he checked Anna for gunshot wounds.
Anna coughed and held her side painfully but managed to shake her head.
"I am fine, but we cannot stay here," Anna gasped softly.
Flashlight beams began to cut through the smoke as Marcus and his men searched the rubble.
"Arthur, you cannot hide from me in my own building!" Marcus taunted from the darkness.
Victoria pulled out her designer tablet and turned the brightness all the way down.
She hacked into the warehouse's localized electrical grid using her override codes.
"I can overload the main generator and create a massive distraction," Victoria whispered to the boy.
"But we need someone to distract the guards so I have time to run the program."
The boy bravely reached into his backpack and pulled out the empty medicine bottle.
He threw the plastic bottle as hard as he could toward the opposite side of the room.
It bounced loudly against a metal barrel and immediately drew the attention of the mercenaries.
Both guards turned their flashlights and fired their weapons at the false sound.
Victoria frantically typed on her tablet and executed the overload command.
The massive electrical box on the wall began to spark violently before erupting into a shower of dangerous electricity.
The remaining lights outside the warehouse exploded loudly.
Marcus cursed and shielded his eyes from the blinding sparks raining down on the floor.
Arthur used the chaotic distraction to grab the silver revolver he had dropped earlier.
He aimed carefully through the smoke and fired twice at the mercenaries.
Both guards dropped to the floor screaming as the bullets shattered their kneecaps.
Marcus realized his men were down and immediately fired his suppressed pistol toward Arthur's position.
A bullet grazed Arthur's shoulder and caused him to drop the revolver in pain.
"It is over, Arthur!" Marcus yelled as he slowly approached the shipping container with his gun raised.

Marcus aimed his weapon directly at Anna's head as she shielded her father.
Just as Marcus pulled the trigger a heavy steel crowbar smashed into the back of his skull.
