Chapter 7 - The Unlikely Hero

Marcus crumpled to the wet concrete floor without making a single sound.
The suppressed pistol clattered harmlessly into a dark puddle of water.
Standing over the unconscious traitor was the rich woman Victoria holding a massive rusted crowbar.
She was breathing heavily and her expensive designer dress was completely ruined.
"I really hate men who point guns at women," Victoria said as she dropped the heavy metal tool.
The young boy ran out from behind the pallets and threw himself into his mother's arms.
Anna wept openly as she hugged her son tightly against her chest.
Arthur held his bleeding shoulder but managed to stand up and embrace them both.
"Thank you, Victoria," Arthur said with profound and genuine gratitude.
Victoria waved her hand dismissively while checking her ruined manicure.
"Save your thanks until we are completely out of this nightmare," she replied practically.
Arthur picked up the zip ties that the mercenaries had brought and securely bound Marcus's hands and feet.
"We need to get Anna to a hospital immediately," Arthur stated as he looked at her pale face.
They cautiously made their way back to the bulletproof SUV parked outside the warehouse.
Victoria took the driver's seat this time and quickly started the massive engine.
Arthur helped Anna and the boy into the back before climbing into the passenger side.
"The police are already on their way," Victoria announced as she checked the vehicle's GPS.
"I sent an emergency distress beacon the moment the lights went out."
Anna rested her head heavily against the leather seat and looked at her father.
"He kept me locked in a basement for three days, Dad," she whispered weakly.
Arthur gently stroked her hair and promised her she would never be in danger again.
As they drove toward the city hospital the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers appeared in the rearview mirror.
Victoria pulled the SUV over to the side of the road to meet the approaching officers.
Several police cars surrounded them and heavily armed officers stepped out.
Arthur felt a massive wave of relief wash over him as he opened his door.
"We need an ambulance for my daughter," Arthur yelled to the approaching captain.
The police captain walked up to the vehicle with a very grim expression on his face.
Instead of calling for medical help the captain unholstered his service weapon and aimed it at Arthur.
"Step out of the vehicle and put your hands behind your head," the captain ordered loudly.
Arthur froze in complete shock as he stared at the barrel of the gun.
"What are you doing? We are the victims here!" Arthur shouted in desperation.

The captain sneered and pulled out a perfectly forged arrest warrant.
"Arthur Pendleton, you are under arrest for the kidnapping and attempted murder of your own daughter," the captain declared.
