Chapter 4 - The Hunted

Marcus returned to the safe house just in time. As he pulled into the alley, he saw two black SUVs idling by the entrance. Armed mercenaries in tactical gear were setting breaching charges on the steel door. Captain Reynolds had tracked the GPS on Marcus's burner phone.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled an AR-15 from the duffel bag Donnie had provided, kicked open his car door, and opened fire.

The element of surprise was complete. Two mercenaries dropped instantly. The others scrambled for cover behind their SUVs, returning fire. Bullets chewed through the brick walls of the alley.

Marcus moved like a ghost, suppressing the remaining shooters, making his way to the back fire escape. He kicked down the barricaded door to the safe house.

"Lily!" he yelled over the gunfire.

She was huddled in the corner, her hands clamped over her ears, exactly as she had described hiding from her mother's killers. Marcus grabbed her, throwing her over his shoulder.

"Hold on tight!"

They escaped over the rooftops, the rain masking their tracks, just as the safe house exploded behind them. Marcus realized then that the law was dead. This was a war.
