Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

It was a bright, crisp spring morning. The snow had finally melted in Boston.

Marcus stood in the cemetery, wearing a sharp grey suit. Beside him stood Lily, wearing a dark blue coat, holding a bouquet of white lilies.

The fallout from the blue ledger had been catastrophic. With Silas dead, Marcus had bypassed the local and regional authorities entirely, flying to Washington D.C. to hand the micro-SD card directly to the Attorney General. The arrests had taken weeks. Dozens of politicians, police officers, and judges were indicted. The syndicate was burned to the ground.

Marcus had resigned as District Attorney. His final act in office was signing the adoption papers, making Lily officially his daughter in the eyes of the law.

They knelt in front of a pristine marble headstone.

Maya Thorne Beloved Daughter and Mother. Guided Home.

Lily placed the flowers gently on the grass. She traced the letters with her small fingers, the silver moon necklace glinting in the sunlight around her neck.

"Do you think she knows we did it?" Lily asked softly. "Do you think she knows the monsters are gone?"

Marcus placed a strong, warm hand on Lily’s shoulder, pulling her close. He looked at the grave, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of the past twelve years finally lift from his chest.

"She knows, Lily," Marcus whispered, tears shining in his eyes, but a genuine smile on his face. "She guided you right to me. Now, come on. Let's go home."
