Chapter 1 - The Breach

Marcus didn’t hesitate. Thirty years of surviving the vicious political and physical crossfire of Boston’s underworld kicked in. He shoved Lily behind him, shielding her small frame with his body. He locked eyes with his closest assistant, Sarah, who had been with him for a decade.

"Sarah, hit the panic button. Now," Marcus ordered, his voice dangerously low.

Before Sarah’s hand could even graze the underside of the desk, the frosted glass door of the chambers shattered inward. A man stepped through the rain of glass. He wore a tailored suit, but his face was a map of violence, dominated by a jagged, pale scar running from his temple to his jaw. In his right hand was a suppressed 9mm pistol.

"The DA and his bastard grandchild," the scarred man sneered. "Silas sends his regards."

Silas Reed. The name hit Marcus like a physical blow. Silas was a cartel ghost he had indicted ten years ago, a man who had slipped bail and vanished. He was Lily's father. The man who had hunted Maya down.

"Get down!" Marcus roared. He grabbed the heavy oak chair beside him and hurled it directly at the assassin. The suppressed gun coughed—thwip, thwip—wood splintering as bullets tore through the chair.

Marcus tackled the scarred man around the waist. The two men crashed into the mahogany wall, knocking framed diplomas to the floor. The assassin was younger, stronger, but Marcus fought with the feral desperation of a father who had already lost his daughter and refused to lose his granddaughter. Marcus slammed his elbow into the man’s throat, hearing a satisfying crunch.

The assassin gasped, dropping the gun. Marcus delivered a brutal right hook, knocking the man out cold on the thick carpet.

"Sarah! Take the girl!" Marcus yelled, scooping up the dropped weapon. "We go down the judge's private elevator. The courthouse is compromised."

Lily was trembling, clutching the metal tin to her chest. Marcus grabbed her small hand. "I’ve got you, Lily. I won't let them take you."
