Chapter 3 - Blood Ties

The next morning, Marcus left Lily locked in the safe room with a prepaid cell phone and strict orders not to open the door for anyone but him. He needed weapons, untraceable cash, and an ally.
He found himself walking into a dimly lit Italian restaurant in the North End before it opened for lunch. The man sitting at the back booth was eating a plate of veal, surrounded by three large men in leather jackets.
"Donnie 'The Razor' Russo," Marcus said, pulling up a chair without asking.
Donnie wiped his mouth with a napkin, smiling thinly. "Marcus Thorne. The great crusader. Last time we sat across from each other, you gave me ten years in Walpole."
"And you got out in five for good behavior," Marcus retorted. "I need a favor, Donnie."
The mobster laughed. "A DA asking a made man for a favor? The world really is ending."
"It's about Silas Reed," Marcus said.
The temperature in the room dropped. Donnie stopped smiling. Silas Reed’s cartel had been aggressively pushing into Donnie’s territory, leaving a trail of bodies.

"Silas murdered my daughter," Marcus said, his voice cracking with raw, unfiltered grief. "And he's hunting my granddaughter. The police are bought. My office is bought. I need guns, and I need a ghost crew."
Donnie stared at the District Attorney. He saw a man who had lost everything, a man with nothing left to lose. "My guys are at your disposal, Thorne. But when you find Silas... leave a piece of him for me."
