Chapter 4 - The Revelation

Emma froze completely, the stolen red folder slipping from her nervous hands.

The photographs scattered across the expensive Persian rug, revealing her entire past to the bright light.

"Why have you been stalking me for three years?" she asked, her voice betraying her deep fear.

Alexander slowly lowered his weapon and walked over to his massive mahogany desk.

"I was never stalking you, Emma, I was keeping a promise to a dead man," he confessed softly.

He poured two glasses of amber bourbon and pushed one across the desk toward her.

"Greg was just a convenient pawn I used to finally bring you here where you are safe."

Emma shook her head in sheer confusion, refusing to touch the expensive alcohol.

"Safe from what?" she demanded loudly.

Alexander looked deeply into her eyes, his cold mask finally cracking to reveal profound sorrow.

"Safe from the people who murdered your first husband," he revealed grimly.

The breath was violently knocked completely out of Emma's lungs.

Her late husband, Mark, had supposedly died in a tragic, random hit-and-run accident when Lily was just a baby.

"Mark was a high school teacher," she stammered, fresh tears filling her eyes.

"Mark was the best forensic accountant my syndicate ever employed," Alexander corrected her.

"He discovered that the rival Kovac cartel was secretly stealing billions from our joint offshore accounts."

"The Kovacs murdered him on the highway before he could bring the final evidence to me."

Emma collapsed into the heavy leather chair, her entire world shattering into a million pieces.

Her perfect, ordinary marriage had been built entirely on a foundation of dangerous mafia lies.

"I swore to Mark that I would always protect his family, but the Kovacs recently discovered you are still alive," Alexander continued.

"That is why I had to use Greg's debt to pull you into my heavily guarded estate today."

Before Emma could even process the shocking truth, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the mansion.

The reinforced glass window of the office shattered inward as a heavily armed mercenary repelled from the roof.
