Chapter 1 - The Ultimatum

The entire cathedral held its breath as Alexander Volkov’s dark eyes remained fixed on Emma.
She gripped her wilting white bouquet so tightly that her knuckles turned completely white.
"I am not a piece of property to be collected, Mr. Volkov," she stated, her voice shaking but defiant.
His expression did not change, but a dangerous, predatory glint appeared in his sharp eyes.
"Greg borrowed five million dollars from my syndicate to fund his failing technology startup."
"He formally offered you as collateral when he finally realized he could not pay me back."
A collective gasp echoed violently through the wooden pews of the ancient church.
Emma felt the blood completely drain from her face as the horrifying truth set in.
The man she had loved, the man who had promised to protect her and her daughter, had literally sold them to the mafia.
Alexander stepped closer, effortlessly invading her personal space with his overwhelming, terrifying presence.
"You have a choice right now, Emma."
"You can walk out of those heavy doors with me today and wipe his massive debt clean."
"Or you can refuse, and I will extract the five million dollars from your family's blood."
He glanced deliberately at five-year-old Lily, who was hiding nervously behind Emma's lace dress.
Panic seized Emma's chest like a physical, crushing vise.
She could not let this ruthless, powerful monster anywhere near her innocent child.
"I will go with you," she whispered, dropping her borrowed wedding bouquet onto the cold stone floor.
Alexander nodded sharply to his suited men, who immediately cleared a wide path to the exit.
He escorted her out of the suffocating cathedral and into the bright, blinding afternoon sunlight.
A fleet of black armored SUVs waited aggressively by the curb with their engines rumbling.
Alexander guided her toward the lead vehicle and opened the heavy, bulletproof door.
Before she could step inside, a muffled, desperate screaming caught her attention.
The pathetic sound was coming directly from the trunk of the sleek, expensive car.
Alexander calmly pressed a silver button on his key fob, and the trunk popped open.
Greg was tied up inside, brutally bruised, bleeding, and weeping uncontrollably in the dark space.
May you like
Alexander pulled a loaded silver gun from his tailored jacket and placed it smoothly into Emma's trembling hand.
"Shoot the coward right now, and you are completely free to walk away from me," the mafia boss ordered coldly.
