Chapter 9 - The Crossfire

The medical room instantly transformed into an absolute, chaotic war zone of blinding muzzle flashes and deafening gunfire.

The corrupt Mayor screamed in terror as he blindly dove behind a massive, overturned metal desk for cover.

Elias Thorne’s ruthless mercenaries clashed directly with the elite SWAT officers, completely destroying the remaining walls of the clinic.

Daniel did not waste a single fraction of a second staring at the terrifying bloodbath unfolding around him.

He crawled frantically through the thick, choking dust and grabbed the suppressed pistol he had dropped earlier.

He completely ignored the screaming, bleeding form of his treacherous mentor, Joe, who was desperately trying to crawl away.

Daniel sprinted toward the back exit of the clinic, completely determined to find the car where Sarah was locked in the trunk.

He burst through the heavy rear doors, stumbling out into the pouring rain of the muddy parking lot.

Joe’s beaten gray sedan was parked awkwardly near a rusted dumpster, completely abandoned in the chaotic crossfire.

Daniel rushed to the back of the car and violently fired a single shot directly into the trunk's locking mechanism.

He yanked the heavy metal lid open, praying silently that the brave detective was still clinging to life.

Sarah was lying inside, incredibly pale and completely unresponsive, but her chest was still rising and falling slightly.

Daniel gently lifted her out of the trunk, holding her fragile body tightly against his own chest.

He needed to get her to a real, honest hospital immediately, or she would absolutely not survive the morning.

He spotted a heavy police cruiser left completely unattended near the edge of the chaotic parking lot.

He carefully placed Sarah in the back seat and jumped into the driver's seat, frantically searching for the keys.

The keys were still in the ignition, dangling wildly as the loud police radio squawked with panicked, overlapping tactical chatter.

Daniel slammed the car into gear, spinning the tires aggressively in the deep, wet mud before finally catching traction.

He tore out of the parking lot, completely leaving the two massive, corrupt criminal empires to entirely destroy each other.

As he sped toward the city hospital, he realized he still had the heavy brass key resting safely in his pocket.

The real ledger was not buried under the garage, nor was it hidden in the abandoned veterinary clinic.

Daniel had secretly mailed the heavy steel box to a highly secure, private bank vault in a completely different state exactly three days ago.

He pulled out his phone and initiated a delayed, encrypted email sequence he had prepared years ago for this exact moment.

The email contained the digital codes to access the vault, and it was currently sending directly to the director of the FBI.
