Chapter 7 - The Mentor's Shadow

Daniel froze completely, the cold steel barrel of the suppressed pistol pressing firmly against the base of his skull.

He could smell the familiar scent of old motor oil and stale tobacco that always surrounded his mentor, Joe.

A profound, sickening wave of absolute betrayal completely washed over Daniel's exhausted mind.

He asked the old man softly why he had murdered his father and ruined his entire life ten years ago.

Joe let out a bitter, humorless laugh that echoed terribly through the dusty veterinary clinic.

He explained that Daniel's father was an honest, foolish man who wanted to take the ledger to the federal authorities.

Joe had spent his entire life building a comfortable, profitable relationship with the corrupt syndicate.

He could not let one righteous mechanic destroy decades of highly lucrative, illegal underground business.

Daniel slowly clenched his fists, completely ignoring the deadly weapon pressed directly against his head.

He calmly demanded to know exactly what Joe had done with the wounded detective.

Joe sneered, stating that the nosy cop was currently bleeding out in the trunk of his car outside.

He promised Daniel that he would bury them both in the same unmarked grave in the forgotten woods.

Joe ordered Daniel to stand up slowly and keep his hands completely visible above his head.

Daniel pushed himself up from the bloody floor, calculating every single desperate option he had left.

As he turned to face his treacherous mentor, he noticed a heavy, rusted oxygen tank standing precariously near Joe's leg.

Daniel pretended to stumble, dropping his hands slightly as if his exhaustion had completely overtaken him.

Joe barked an aggressive command, instinctively taking a single step backward to maintain his tactical distance.

That tiny fraction of a second was the only distraction Daniel needed to make his final, desperate move.

He aggressively kicked the heavy oxygen tank, sending it crashing violently into Joe's shins.

The old man cried out in unexpected pain, his suppressed pistol firing a wild shot directly into the ceiling.

Daniel lunged forward like a striking viper, completely tackling the older man to the hard linoleum floor.

They engaged in a brutal, desperate struggle for the dropped weapon, completely destroying the remaining medical cabinets.

Daniel finally managed to wrench the gun from Joe's weakened grip, aiming it directly at the old man's chest.

He breathed heavily, his finger resting incredibly dangerously on the sensitive trigger of the pistol.

Joe smiled a bloody, wicked smile and boldly challenged Daniel to finally pull the trigger and become a true killer.

Before Daniel could make the heavy choice, the front doors of the clinic were violently kicked entirely off their hinges.

The corrupt Mayor of the city walked into the room, completely surrounded by a dozen highly trained, elite SWAT officers.
