Chapter 1 - The Hidden Ledger

Daniel pulled the drawer open slowly.

The rusty metal tracks groaned under the weight of the thick steel box inside.

He reached in with his grease-stained hands and lifted the heavy container onto his desk.

He used the same small brass key to unlock the heavy padlock securing the lid.

The lock clicked open with a sharp, definitive snap.

Daniel took a deep breath and flipped the heavy lid back.

Inside rested a thick, worn leather ledger bound in heavy twine.

Beneath the ledger was a velvet pouch filled with dozens of uncut, raw diamonds.

This was the secret his father had died protecting ten years ago.

Daniel had spent a decade playing the role of a simple, hardworking mechanic to keep this stash completely hidden.

He carefully opened the ledger, scanning the long columns of names, dates, and massive financial transactions.

Every single powerful politician and corrupt police chief in the city was listed on these fragile pages.

Suddenly, the heavy metal rolling door at the front of the garage rattled violently.

Someone was aggressively pounding on the corrugated steel from the outside.

Daniel quickly shoved the ledger and the diamonds back into the steel box.

He locked the box, threw it into the drawer, and pocketed the brass key.

He grabbed a heavy steel wrench from his workbench, his knuckles turning completely white.

He walked silently toward the front of the dark garage, his heart hammering against his ribs.

A loud, metallic screech echoed through the shop as the side security door was violently kicked open.

Three men wearing dark tactical gear and heavy combat boots stepped into the dim light.

They were holding suppressed automatic weapons, their faces obscured by black ski masks.

Daniel did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.

He hurled the heavy steel wrench through the air with brutal, terrifying precision.

The wrench struck the lead gunman squarely in the chest, knocking him backward into the alley.

Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the second man by the tactical vest and slamming him into a tool rack.

Heavy metal tools rained down on them as the third gunman raised his weapon.

A suppressed gunshot completely shattered the window of Daniel's tiny office.

Daniel dove behind the massive engine block of the custom Harley-Davidson for cover.

He realized the men were not here to rob a simple motorcycle repair shop.

The third gunman slowly approached the motorcycle, his weapon aimed directly at Daniel's hiding spot.

The gunman coldly announced that Elias Thorne wanted his property back tonight.

Daniel froze completely as a horrifying realization washed over him.

He looked down at the custom Harley-Davidson he had been repairing all week.

Taped discreetly under the heavy fuel tank was a glowing, red military tracking device.
