Chapter 9 - The Signature

Silence stretched in the expansive office, broken only by the sound of the rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Julian looked at Clara. For the first time in perhaps decades, he truly saw her. He didn't see the quiet wife who managed his calendar. He didn't see the woman he had foolishly thought he could replace with a younger, shinier model. He saw a monster of his own creation. A titan who was vastly, infinitely smarter than he could ever hope to be.

"You planned this," Julian whispered, his voice cracking. "From the day I asked for the divorce. You didn't fight me on the settlement because you knew the company was going to collapse."

"I knew it was going to collapse because I pulled the support beams out myself," Clara corrected him, her voice devoid of any pity. "You thought you built this empire, Julian. But you were just the mascot. I laid every brick. I made every strategic alliance. And when you decided I was disposable, I simply decided to take my bricks back. It turns out, without me holding it up, your house was made of glass."

Julian's hands shook violently as he reached for the Montblanc pen on his desk—the same pen Clara had bought him when they closed their first million-dollar deal.

He looked at the dotted line on the forfeiture agreement. It was a death warrant for his ego, his status, his entire identity. But the alternative was a concrete cell.

With a suffocating sob that tore from his throat, Julian pressed the pen to the paper. He signed his name. Once. Twice. Ten times. He signed away his company, his properties, his offshore accounts, and his legacy.

When he finished, the pen slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the oak desk. He looked empty, hollowed out. A ghost in a bespoke suit.

"Harrison," Clara said sharply, not taking her eyes off Julian. "Notarize those and file them with the SEC immediately."

The lawyers swiftly gathered the documents, packing them away with terrifying efficiency.

"It's done," Clara said, standing up and smoothing the front of her jacket. "You have thirty minutes to clear out your personal effects. Security will escort you to the lobby. Your corporate credit cards have already been deactivated."
