Chapter 2 - Poisoning the Well

Clara did not immediately approach her ex-husband. That would be too eager, too emotional. Clara was a strategist, and a strategist knows that the best way to destroy a king is to first dismantle his army. She began to move through the ballroom, her presence parting the crowd like the Red Sea.
Her first target was Arthur Vance, the CEO of Vanguard Equity and the primary backer of Julian's upcoming mega-project, the 'Sterling Spire' in downtown Manhattan.
"Clara," Arthur said, his voice a mixture of shock and profound respect. "My god, you look... formidable. I didn't think Julian had the spine to invite you."
"He didn't, Arthur," Clara murmured, accepting his kiss on her cheek. "But since my family trust still owns the land this building sits on, security was remarkably accommodating."
Arthur chuckled nervously. "It’s a bold move, Clara. But Julian is riding high right now. The Spire project is going to double his net worth."
Clara took a slow sip of her champagne. "Is it? Tell me, Arthur, have you personally reviewed the soil stability reports for the Hudson sector of that project? Or did you just take Julian's word for it?"
Arthur’s brow furrowed. "Julian assured the board the zoning and environmental hurdles were cleared last month."
"Julian is a salesman, Arthur. I was the architect of his deals. Check the public records filed in Albany yesterday morning. The environmental permits were revoked. The foundation alone will cost an extra four hundred million to stabilize, effectively wiping out your projected margins." She leaned in, her perfume—a sharp, expensive blend of jasmine and sandalwood—clouding his senses. "Pull your funding, Arthur. By Monday morning, Vanguard Equity will be tied to a sinking ship."
Before Arthur could process the bomb she had just dropped, Clara was already gliding away, leaving the billionaire investor frantically pulling out his phone to call his risk management team.
She repeated this maneuver with surgical precision over the next hour. To the Senator who fast-tracked Julian's tax breaks, she dropped a hint about an upcoming federal audit into Julian’s offshore accounts. To the media mogul who owned the city's largest papers, she casually mentioned an exclusive interview she was ready to give regarding Julian’s hidden debts.

Across the room, Julian watched her, his panic rising. He could see the most powerful men in the city looking at him not with respect, but with sudden, terrifying hesitation. Chloe, oblivious to the high-stakes warfare happening around her, tugged on his sleeve. "Babe, why is she here? Tell security to throw her out. She's ruining my night."
Julian gritted his teeth, his grip on his scotch glass tightening until his knuckles turned white. "Shut up, Chloe. Just... smile and shut up. She's doing something. I need to find out what."
