Chapter 3 - The Unseen Architect

To understand Clara's vengeance, one had to understand her silence over the past six months. When Julian had unceremoniously served her divorce papers via a courier while he was vacationing in St. Barts with Chloe, Clara had not cried. She had not broken down. She had simply walked into her private home office, poured a glass of Macallan 25, and opened her laptop.
For twenty-five years, Julian was the face of Sterling Enterprises, but Clara was the brain. She knew where every skeleton was buried because she was the one who had dug the graves. She knew about the inflated assets, the leveraged buyouts built on a house of cards, and the illegal political donations.
While the tabloids called her a "discarded trophy wife," Clara had quietly liquidated her independent assets. She had routed millions through dummy corporations in the Cayman Islands, setting up a shadow firm called Obsidian Holdings.
Now, back at the gala, Clara stood by the ice sculpture, waiting. She knew Julian wouldn't be able to stand the suspense. He was arrogant, but he was also deeply paranoid.
"What do you think you're doing, Clara?"
The voice hissed in her ear. She turned slowly to face Julian. Up close, the stress was visible. The fine lines around his eyes were deeper, and he smelled of panic and expensive cologne.
"Enjoying a party, Julian," Clara said smoothly. "The caviar is excellent this year. Though, I suppose you had to cut corners on the floral arrangements to afford Chloe's new Bentley."
"Don't play games with me," Julian snarled, his voice dropping to a vicious whisper. "You have no power here anymore. You've been bought out. You signed the settlement."
"I signed a settlement relinquishing my shares in Sterling Enterprises, yes," Clara agreed, her eyes gleaming with a dangerous light. "But you see, Julian, you were always so focused on the big picture that you never read the fine print. Who do you think bought the debt for the Sterling Spire from the European banks last month?"
Julian froze. "That was an anonymous private equity firm. Obsidian Holdings."
Clara took a step closer, tapping a perfectly manicured finger against his chest. "I am Obsidian Holdings, Julian. I own your debt. All of it. And as of midnight tonight, you are in breach of covenant. I'm calling in the loans."

Julian’s face went completely slack. "You... you can't. You don't have that kind of capital. That's a billion-dollar loan!"
"I have friends, Julian. Friends who respected me, not the loudmouth who took credit for my work." Clara smiled, a predator showing its teeth. "Enjoy your speech tonight. It will be the last one you ever give as a billionaire."
