Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

Clara didn't leave the building. She walked calmly to the private VIP lounge overlooking the ballroom, a room reserved for high-level negotiations. She poured herself a glass of sparkling water, waiting. Three minutes later, the door slammed open.
Julian burst in, looking like a madman. His bowtie was undone, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wild with animalistic desperation.
"You bitch!" he screamed, lunging across the room. He slammed both hands onto the mahogany table, looming over her. "You ruined me! You destroyed twenty years of work in five minutes!"
"I built it, Julian. I just decided to demolish my own property," Clara said smoothly, not moving an inch.
"I'll have you thrown in federal prison!" Julian spat, saliva flying from his lips. "I'll sue you for corporate espionage, defamation, hacking—"
"Oh, Julian, stop," Clara interrupted, her voice suddenly tired, laced with heavy disdain. She reached into her clutch and pulled out a small, silver USB drive, tossing it onto the table between them. "Do you know what's on this?"
Julian stared at it, breathing heavily. "What?"
"It’s the unedited audio recordings from your private meetings with Mayor Higgins," Clara said coldly. "The ones where you explicitly agree to bribe city inspectors to look the other way on the faulty steel used in your residential towers in Brooklyn. The towers where thousands of families currently sleep."
Julian recoiled as if the USB drive had bitten him. All the fight drained out of him instantly. "How... how did you..."
"You used the same password for everything, Julian. 'Sterling1'. You were a financial genius, supposedly, but an absolute idiot in reality," Clara sneered. "If I give this to the FBI, you won't just lose your company. You will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a concrete cell."
Julian collapsed into a leather armchair, burying his face in his hands. The great titan was reduced to a weeping, hyperventilating mess. "What do you want, Clara?" he sobbed. "You want the money? Take it. You want the houses? Take them. Just... please don't send me to prison."

Clara stood up, walking over to him. She looked down at the man she had loved, the man who had betrayed her so callously. She felt absolutely nothing.
"I want everything," Clara whispered.
