Chapter 8 - No Way Out

Julian stared at the documents, his mind racing, desperately looking for a loophole. For twenty-five years, he had always found a way out. He was a survivor.
"You can't do this without a majority board vote in session," Julian argued, his voice trembling. "And even if you oust me, I still own thirty percent of the equity! I'll fight you in court for a decade!"
Clara smiled, a cold, terrifying expression. She gestured to her lead attorney, a ruthless shark named Harrison.
Harrison stepped forward, tapping a specific document. "Actually, Mr. Sterling, you won't. Per the terms of the Obsidian Holdings debt covenant, in the event of gross financial misconduct—which the SEC raid this morning firmly establishes—the debtor must forfeit all remaining equity in the parent company to cover the massive shortfall."
Julian’s face turned gray. "You're taking my shares. You're taking everything."
"Not everything," Clara chimed in cheerfully. "You still have your freedom. For now." She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. "Here is the deal, Julian. The only deal you will ever get. You will sign the forfeiture papers right now, transferring your remaining equity to me. You will resign loudly and publicly, stating 'health reasons.' You will walk out of this building with nothing but the clothes on your back."
"And if I refuse?" Julian spat, a dying ember of defiance in his chest.

Clara pulled the silver USB drive from her pocket and set it gently on the glass coffee table. "If you refuse, my lawyers walk across the street to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and hand them this drive. The bribery, the tax evasion, the fraud. You will face a minimum of twenty-five years in federal prison. There will be no country club prison for you, Julian. I will make sure the prosecutor goes for maximum security."
Julian looked at the USB drive, then at the towering stack of forfeiture documents. He was trapped. The empire he thought he had built, the legacy he thought was his, had been a cage Clara had slowly built around him, waiting for the perfect moment to lock the door.
