Chapter 4 - The Implosion

The grand clock chimed ten. It was time for the keynote address. The lights dimmed, and a spotlight hit the main stage. Julian, looking visibly pale and sweating through his custom Tom Ford tuxedo, stumbled slightly as he walked up the stairs to the microphone. The room fell silent, expecting the usual charismatic roar of the great real estate titan.

Instead, Julian cleared his throat nervously. He glanced out into the audience. In the very front row, sitting at the most prominent table, was Clara. She was sipping champagne, her legs crossed, watching him with the calm anticipation of a lioness watching a wounded gazelle.

"Ladies and... gentlemen," Julian began, his voice lacking its usual booming confidence. "Thank you for coming to the Sterling Heritage Gala. Tonight, we celebrate the future. The Sterling Spire will be a monument to... to innovation."

Behind him, a massive digital screen was supposed to display a beautiful 3D rendering of the new skyscraper. Julian clicked his remote.

The screen flickered. But instead of a skyscraper, the screen displayed a massive, high-definition spreadsheet. It was a leaked internal document from Sterling Enterprises. The text was massive, highlighting in bright red ink: PROJECTED LOSS: $400 MILLION. INSOLVENCY IMMINENT.

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Whispers erupted into outright shouts.

Julian spun around, staring at the screen in absolute horror. "Turn that off!" he screamed at the AV booth. "Turn it off right now! It's a hack! It's fake!"

He clicked the remote again. The slide changed. Now, it was a scanned copy of a legal summons from the Securities and Exchange Commission, detailing an investigation into Julian Sterling for wire fraud and embezzlement.

The ballroom descended into absolute chaos. Reporters were live-streaming the screens. Investors were literally sprinting for the exits to call their brokers.

"Security!" Julian roared, his face purple with rage. "Get her out! Clara did this! Arrest her!"

Clara simply sat there, unflinching. She didn't look at the screen. She kept her eyes locked on Julian, drinking in his total, public destruction. She raised her glass to him one final time, then gracefully stood up, her velvet dress sweeping the floor, and began to walk out of the room. She didn't need to stay. The bomb had detonated. The fallout would handle the rest.
