Chapter 4 - The Breathless Escape

The toxic gray gas filled the underground bunker with a terrifying, incredibly suffocating speed.
My lungs burned fiercely with every desperate, shallow breath I frantically tried to take.
Ms. Penelope collapsed heavily onto her knees, coughing uncontrollably into her expensive designer silk scarf.
Mr. Henderson aggressively smashed his heavy tactical flashlight against the bolted ventilation grate, but the solid steel refused to yield.
I forced myself to remain calm, desperately remembering the specific clues written in my father's secret letter.
He had explicitly mentioned that I absolutely needed his antique silver pocket watch to survive this exact ordeal.
I desperately searched the metal table, tossing aside stacks of heavy financial ledgers in the blinding, thick smoke.
Sitting safely inside a small velvet box near the edge of the desk was my father's legendary, heavy timepiece.
I grabbed the silver watch and frantically examined its intricate, beautifully engraved surface.
I noticed a tiny, highly unusual groove cut deep into the winding mechanism on the side of the watch.
I rushed over to the primary control panel where Mr. Henderson was struggling fiercely to bypass the lockdown.
There was a small, circular keyhole hidden discreetly beneath the main heavy power switch.
I jammed the winding stem of the pocket watch directly into the tiny, completely hidden keyhole.
I twisted the watch firmly to the right, desperately praying that my father's brilliant mind had designed a manual override.
A loud mechanical clunk echoed deeply through the walls, and the deafening hissing sound immediately stopped.
The heavy emergency exhaust fans roared to life, aggressively sucking the toxic gas out of the enclosed room.
The electronic lock on the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs finally disengaged with a loud, relieving beep.
We gasped for the returning fresh air, our bodies trembling wildly from the incredibly close near-death experience.
Mr. Henderson grabbed his weapon and slowly led the way back up the steep, daunting concrete stairs.
We pushed the bookshelf door open and stumbled back into the primary study, completely and utterly exhausted.
The study was entirely empty, but we could hear loud, angry voices echoing from the main living room.
We crept silently down the mahogany hallway, desperately trying to remain completely hidden in the dark shadows.
Calvin was standing confidently in the center of the living room, speaking frantically to two uniformed police officers.
He was holding a blood-stained towel against his arm, portraying the role of a terrified victim absolutely perfectly.
Tabitha was standing right beside him, crying fake, highly dramatic tears for the sympathetic, gullible officers.
Calvin pointed an accusatory finger toward the hallway, loudly declaring that I had just tried to brutally murder him.
He claimed that I had violently stabbed him with gardening shears in a psychotic, jealous rage over the inheritance.

One of the heavily armed police officers drew his weapon and began walking cautiously toward our hiding spot.
He aggressively ordered me to step out of the shadows immediately with my hands raised high in the air.
