Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice

The deafening sound of Leo's screams filled the tiny, claustrophobic maintenance room.
Victor flinched visibly, entirely unprepared to murder a man in front of his crying nephew.
Clara used the crucial moment of distraction to grab the hot barrel of the shotgun.
She shoved the weapon fiercely toward the ceiling just as Victor reflexively pulled the trigger.
The blast shattered the overhead concrete, raining dust and debris completely over them.
Rico lunged forward from the workbench, ignoring his agonizing pain to tackle Victor to the ground.
He wrestled the shotgun away from his brother-in-law and threw it aggressively across the room.
Victor scrambled backward, realizing he had entirely lost his only chance at deadly vengeance.
He screamed that Rico would never truly find peace in this lifetime.
Victor pulled a live fragmentation grenade from his jacket pocket and yanked the metal pin entirely out.
He dropped the explosive device onto the floor and smiled a sad, twisted smile.
Clara screamed in pure horror as the small metal spoon clinked loudly against the cold concrete.
Rico did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.
He dove fiercely across the floor, grabbing the live grenade with his bare hands.
He threw the explosive deep into a narrow, dark drainage shaft located at the back of the room.

He spun around and tackled Clara and Leo securely to the floor, shielding them entirely with his massive body.
The deafening, cataclysmic explosion violently shook the very foundation of the earth beneath them.
