Chapter 5 - The Kidnapping

The armored SUV tore fiercely down the dark, winding roads away from the burning estate.
Clara held Leo tightly against her chest, her heart hammering violently in her throat.
She demanded to know why Dante had betrayed the family and left Rico to be slaughtered.
Dante laughed a cold, emotionless laugh while keeping his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
He explained that Rico had become incredibly weak and pathetic since his wife was murdered.
The Vivaldi syndicate had offered Dante millions of dollars and a highly coveted leadership position to deliver the child.
Clara realized she was completely trapped inside a moving steel cage with a ruthless traitor.
She gently rocked the crying toddler, desperately scanning the dark interior of the vehicle for a weapon.
She slowly reached into her apron pocket and grasped the heavy metal corkscrew she had forgotten to leave at the restaurant.
Dante parked the SUV inside a massive, abandoned industrial warehouse on the edge of the city.
He turned off the engine and pulled his heavy service pistol from his shoulder holster.
He told Clara that she was no longer necessary to the transaction and raised his weapon.
Clara lunged forward over the seat, driving the sharp corkscrew violently into Dante's shoulder.
Dante roared in unexpected agony, dropping his gun onto the floorboard as he struggled to grab her.
Clara scrambled backward, trying frantically to open the heavy, child-locked doors.
Suddenly, the massive steel doors of the warehouse blew completely inward with a deafening crash.
A dark figure stepped through the thick smoke, holding a tactical shotgun.

It was Rico, covered entirely in soot and blood, looking like a terrifying god of vengeance.
He raised his weapon, but he suddenly coughed up a massive amount of blood and collapsed heavily to his knees.
