Chapter 2 - The Mansion

Clara tried to yank her arm away, but Rico's grip was like an iron vice.

He signaled his massive head of security, and Dante immediately stepped forward.

Before Clara could even scream for help, she was forcefully escorted out the back doors of the restaurant.

They threw her into the back of a heavily armored black SUV alongside the sleeping toddler.

Rico sat across from her in the dark vehicle, his icy eyes practically piercing through her soul.

He demanded to know exactly why a member of the Vivaldi syndicate was serving food to his son.

Clara trembled violently and swore that she was not a mafia assassin.

She explained that she had dated a terrible man years ago who had forcibly branded her with the tattoo.

She had run away to New York just to escape his relentless abuse.

Rico listened silently, analyzing every single micro-expression on her terrified face.

He told her that she was going to be Leo's new permanent nanny, starting immediately.

If she refused the job, he promised she would simply disappear into the East River.

They arrived at a massive, heavily fortified estate hidden deep in the woods of Long Island.

Clara carried the sleeping boy up the grand marble staircase to a luxurious, quiet nursery.

She gently placed Leo into his bed and pulled the heavy blanket up to his chin.

She noticed a small, flashing red light coming from the eye of a stuffed bear on the shelf.

Clara carefully picked up the toy and ripped the seam completely open.

She found a highly sophisticated, military-grade audio transmitting bug hidden inside the stuffing.

Someone in Rico's heavily guarded inner circle was actively listening to every single word spoken in the nursery.
