Chapter 4 - The Fugitive

Elena stared at the glowing red screen in absolute despair.
The highly encrypted drive was utterly useless without Victor's physical fingerprint to unlock it.
She was now a wanted fugitive, framed for attempted murder, and actively hunted by professional mercenaries.
She pulled her hood down low over her face as a police cruiser slowly drove past the internet cafe window.
Elena realized that she was the only person left who actually knew the terrifying truth about Sylvia.
If Sylvia successfully eliminated her, there would be absolutely nothing stopping the wicked woman from killing baby Leo next.
Elena knew she could not just hide and wait for the police to sort out the truth.
She had to actively warn Victor before Sylvia had the chance to strike again.
She purchased a cheap, untraceable burner phone from the cafe attendant using the last of her cash.
Elena nervously dialed Victor's private cell phone number, praying that he would actually answer.
The phone rang three times before the line finally clicked open.
"Victor, you have to listen to me, Sylvia is the one trying to kill your son!" Elena pleaded frantically into the receiver.
There was a heavy, agonizing silence on the other end of the line.
When Victor finally spoke, his voice sounded incredibly slurred, weak, and disoriented.
"Elena, I cannot feel my legs, and the room is spinning," Victor gasped softly.
Elena felt a massive wave of sheer terror crash over her entire body.
Before Victor could say another word, the phone was violently snatched away from him.
"You really should have just stayed hidden, you pathetic little maid," Sylvia's cruel voice whispered into the speaker.
Sylvia proudly confessed that she had just spiked Victor's evening tea with a rare, untraceable paralytic toxin.

"By the time the sun rises, I will be a grieving widow, and you will be the prime suspect," Sylvia laughed maliciously.
The phone line went completely dead, leaving Elena staring at the blank screen in pure horror.
