Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

The entire warehouse fell into a sudden, terrifying silence. The spinning blades of the meat grinder whirred softly in the background. FBI agents repelled from the skylights, their laser sights painting Chief Sterling in green dots. Sterling ignored them, dragging Martha backward toward a heavy steel security door. "Back off, or I cut her!" Sterling screamed, his eyes wild and desperate. Bear stepped out from behind his cover, the silver flash drive clenched in his bloody fist. "It's over, Sterling," Bear said, his voice deadly calm despite the raging storm inside him. "You have the FBI, state police, and the Hounds locking down this entire block." Martha whimpered slightly as the cold steel pressed harder against her skin. "I'm walking out of here, and she's my insurance policy," Sterling panted, sweating profusely. Bear took one slow, deliberate step forward. "If you hurt her, there isn't a hole deep enough for you to hide in," Bear warned. "Give me the drive, Stone," Sterling demanded, holding out his free hand. "Slide it across the floor, and I'll let her go when I reach the car." Bear looked at the drive, the culmination of his father's sacrifice and his own brutal mission. He looked at his mother, the only family he had left in the world. There was no hesitation in his heart. Bear tossed the drive across the smooth concrete floor. It slid perfectly, stopping just inches from Sterling's expensive leather shoes. Sterling smiled greedily, momentarily taking his eyes off Bear to look at the prize. That split second of distraction was all Martha needed. She violently stomped her heel down onto Sterling's instep. As Sterling flinched, she threw her head back, smashing her skull into his nose. Sterling cried out in pain, loosening his grip on the knife. Martha spun away, diving onto the floor just as Bear charged forward like a freight train. Bear slammed into Sterling with the force of a solid brick wall. The corrupt Chief flew backward, crashing violently through the wooden doors of his office. Bear stepped into the ruined office, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. Sterling scrambled backward, bleeding from his nose and coughing on the dust. "You're making a mistake," Sterling wheezed, holding his broken ribs. "I have judges on my payroll, I'll be out on bail by midnight." Bear knelt down, forcefully rolling Sterling onto his stomach. He snapped the cuffs tightly onto Sterling's wrists. "Not where you're going," Bear whispered directly into the corrupt cop's ear. "These ledgers are going straight to a federal grand jury." FBI agents rushed into the room, hauling the defeated Chief to his feet. Bear walked out of the office and knelt beside his mother. "Are you okay, Mom?" he asked, helping her stand. Martha smiled, dusting off her apron with shaky hands. "I've had worse days at the diner," she joked weakly. Bear hugged her tight, finally letting the tension leave his massive body. Everything was over, the bad guys were caught, and the evidence was secure. But as Bear watched Sterling being dragged away, he noticed something terrifying. The silver flash drive was no longer on the floor where Sterling had dropped it.
