Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

The diner fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The sergeant stared at the massive biker, his face flushing a deep, violent shade of red. His hand dropped instinctively to the heavy duty belt at his waist. Martha, the elderly waitress, trembled as she looked between her son and the furious police officer. "Bear, please sit down," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the neon sign. Bear did not move a single muscle. His steel-gray eyes remained locked on the sergeant, unblinking and devoid of fear. Sergeant Vance puffed out his chest, trying to reclaim the authority that had just been shattered along with the coffee pot. "You're stepping into police business, biker," Vance sneered, taking a half-step forward. "I'm stepping into family business," Bear replied, his deep voice rattling the silverware on the nearby tables. The teenager in the corner booth slowly raised his smartphone, hitting record. Vance noticed the camera and his anger boiled over into reckless pride. "She assaulted a police officer by dumping burning coffee on me," Vance lied smoothly. Martha gasped, tears welling in her eyes at the blatant fabrication. "I tripped on your boot, sir, you stuck it out," she pleaded weakly. Bear’s massive hands curled into tight, leather-clad fists. He knew exactly what Vance was doing, establishing a false narrative to justify an arrest. "Walk away, officer, before you make a mistake you can't undo," Bear warned softly. Vance smiled a cruel, crooked smile. "That's a threat against a sworn officer of the law," Vance declared loudly for the room to hear. With a swift, practiced motion, Vance unclipped his holster. The metallic click echoed through the diner like a gunshot. Patrons screamed and ducked under their tables as Vance drew his weapon. He pointed the barrel directly at Bear’s chest. "Get on the ground, now!" Vance roared, his finger resting dangerously close to the trigger. Bear did not flinch, but his eyes shifted to the front door of the diner. The little bell jingled cheerfully as three more uniformed officers walked in. They saw Vance with his gun drawn and immediately drew their own weapons. Four guns were now pointed at Bear. Vance smirked, knowing he had completely won the standoff. "You're going away for a long time, biker," Vance spat. Bear slowly raised his hands in surrender, but a dark smile crept across his bearded face. "I wouldn't be so sure about that, Vance," Bear whispered. The lead backup officer stepped forward, but he didn't aim at Bear. He pressed the barrel of his service weapon directly against the back of Sergeant Vance’s head.
