Chapter 3 - Fire and Ash

A deafening explosion shattered the quiet morning outside the diner. The windows rattled violently, throwing a shower of fine dust over the terrified patrons. Bear instinctively threw his massive body over his mother, shielding her from the shockwave. Across the street, Miller's police cruiser erupted into a massive ball of orange flame. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, blocking out the morning sun. Vance used the chaos to his advantage, launching himself backward through the swinging kitchen doors. "Stop him!" Miller yelled, recovering his balance and raising his weapon. Bear helped Martha to her feet, his eyes scanning her for any injuries. "I'm fine, go get him, Jax," she urged, using his real name for the first time. Bear charged toward the kitchen, his heavy boots crushing the scattered glass. He burst through the swinging doors, but the kitchen was completely empty. The back alley exit stood wide open, a cold wind rushing in. Bear ran out into the alley, drawing a heavy tactical pistol from his shoulder holster. He looked left and right, but Vance had vanished into the maze of backstreets. Sirens wailed in the distance, a chaotic symphony of approaching disaster. Bear pulled an encrypted radio from his belt, his face a mask of pure fury. "Command, this is Agent Stone, the target has rabbited," Bear spoke into the device. Static crackled before a frantic voice replied. "Stone, we are taking heavy fire at the precinct, it's an ambush!" the voice screamed. Bear’s blood ran cold. Vance wasn't a rogue cop; the entire police force was essentially a heavily armed syndicate. He rushed back into the diner, where Miller was frantically checking the patrons. "They set us up," Bear told Miller, holstering his weapon. "The raid on the precinct went bad, they knew we were coming." Miller looked sick to his stomach, realizing the scale of the corruption. "The Chief," Miller whispered, his eyes wide with sudden realization. "Chief Sterling is the only one who knew the exact timing of your raid." Bear nodded grimly, realizing he was trapped in a town controlled by the enemy. "We need to get my mother out of here right now," Bear ordered. Before they could move, a black armored SUV skidded to a halt outside the diner. Four heavily armed men in tactical gear poured out, leveling assault rifles at the windows. They didn't wear police uniforms; they wore black masks with no insignia. A megaphone crackled from the SUV. "Send the fed and the woman out, or everyone inside dies," a distorted voice demanded. Bear looked at the terrified families huddled under the tables. He looked at his mother, who squeezed his hand with a trembling grip. Bear realized there was only one way to save the innocent people in the diner. He slowly raised his hands and walked straight toward the front door.
