Chapter 2 - The Blurred Lines

Sergeant Vance froze, the cold steel pressing into his skull sending a shockwave down his spine. The entire diner held its collective breath. "Drop it, Vance," the backup officer ordered, his voice trembling slightly but full of resolve. Vance slowly lowered his weapon, his mind racing to comprehend the betrayal. "Officer Miller, have you lost your mind?" Vance hissed through clenched teeth. Miller did not back down, keeping his gun firmly planted. "I'm tired of looking the other way while you terrorize this town, Sergeant," Miller replied. Bear lowered his massive hands, his dark eyes studying the young, nervous cop. Martha leaned against the counter, her breathing shallow as the danger shifted. The other two officers in the doorway stood paralyzed, unsure of who to support. "You boys better think real carefully about your next move," Bear said to the officers at the door. Vance dropped his gun to the floor with a heavy thud. He slowly raised his hands, turning his head just enough to glare at Miller. "You are throwing away your career for a waitress and a dirty biker," Vance spat. "They are better people than you will ever be," Miller countered. Bear stepped forward and kicked Vance's weapon far across the checkered floor. He then reached into his leather vest, moving slowly so as not to spook the tense officers. He pulled out a small, metallic badge and tossed it onto the diner counter. It clattered against the ceramic plates, catching the harsh fluorescent light. It was a federal investigator's shield. Vance stared at the badge, the color rapidly draining from his arrogant face. "You're not a biker," Vance whispered in horror. "I'm a lot of things, Vance," Bear said, his voice like grinding stones. "But mostly, I'm the guy sent to dismantle your little extortion ring." The teenager in the corner was still recording, capturing every single word. Miller finally lowered his weapon, taking a deep breath as the tension broke. "We have a squad waiting down the street to raid your precinct, Vance," Bear revealed. Vance let out a dark, manic laugh that sent shivers down Martha's spine. "You think you're the first fed to come through here?" Vance asked mockingly. He reached into his own pocket with lightning speed, pulling out a small detonator. His thumb hovered over the glowing red button. "This town belongs to my boss, and he doesn't like unexpected guests," Vance smiled. He slammed his thumb down hard on the button.
