Chapter 9 - The Father's Betrayal

Emma stood paralyzed on the concrete pier, unable to comprehend what she was seeing.

Her father, Thomas Carter, casually walked over to stand directly beside Grant Maddox.

He did not look like a hostage at all; he looked like a man completely in charge of the situation.

"Dad?" Emma whispered, her voice breaking with utter confusion and heartbreak.

Thomas sighed heavily and looked at his daughter with an expression of mild disappointment.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Emma," Thomas said, echoing Julian's exact words.

The horrifying reality crashed down on Emma with the terrible force of a falling building.

Her father was not just a retired commercial freight dispatcher.

He was the mastermind logistics coordinator for Maddox's entire global smuggling ring.

He was the one who had intentionally delayed her humanitarian convoy eleven months ago.

He had ruthlessly used his own daughter's mission to cover up a multi-million-dollar theft.

"Hand over the flash drive, Emma, and you can join our operation," Thomas offered smoothly.

"We could genuinely use a director with your unique international field experience."

Emma looked at the man who raised her, feeling nothing but absolute, crushing disgust.

She slowly walked forward and placed the flash drive directly into her father's outstretched hand.

Thomas smiled in victory and plugged the drive into Maddox's portable command terminal.

He did not realize that Emma used the drive to upload a localized, military-grade EMP virus.

The virus activated instantly, plunging the entire shipyard and all of Maddox's vehicles into complete, dead darkness.
