Chapter 5 - The Burner Phone

Emma grabbed a glass pot of boiling coffee from the shattered espresso machine above her head.

She hurled the scalding liquid directly into the face of the first advancing gunman.

The man screamed in pure agony, dropping his heavy assault rifle to the linoleum floor.

Emma scooped up the fallen weapon and fired two precise shots into the ceiling to create a massive distraction.

"Move to the kitchen exit!" she commanded Elias, pushing him forward through the smoke.

They sprinted through the swinging doors and burst out into the freezing, dark alleyway.

Emma expertly hot-wired an idling delivery van while Elias covered her with the stolen rifle.

They sped away into the night, leaving the remaining assassins firing blindly into the empty darkness.

Elias slumped against the passenger seat, staring at Emma in absolute awe.

"You are definitely not just a waitress," Elias breathed heavily.

Emma ignored the comment, focused entirely on checking the tactical vest of the gunman she had incapacitated.

She had swiped his burner phone from his pocket during the chaotic struggle in the diner.

She unlocked the cracked screen and quickly pulled up the recent call log.

There was only one outbound call made just two minutes before the ambush began.

She dialed the number and put it on speakerphone for Elias to hear.

A familiar, panicked voice answered on the other end of the line.

"Did you kill Elias and the waitress yet?" Julian Mercer demanded.
