Chapter 2 - The Stolen Blueprint

Rachel dropped Maddie off at her sister's house early the next morning.
She drove aggressively to the upscale fertility clinic in the city center.
The clinic director, Dr. Evans, was pacing nervously behind his mahogany desk.
He looked as though he had not slept in several days.
"We recently upgraded our genetic tracking software to comply with new federal regulations," Dr. Evans explained nervously.
He slid a thick, heavily redacted manila folder across the desk toward her.
"Maddie's DNA profile triggered an emergency alert in our global database," he whispered.
Rachel opened the folder and stared at the pages of complex genetic markers.
"What exactly does this mean?" she demanded, feeling a cold knot form in her stomach.
Dr. Evans swallowed hard and avoided making direct eye contact with her.
"The sperm donor you and Grant originally selected was a young medical student with no history of hereditary disease," he said.
Rachel nodded impatiently, remembering the meticulous selection process they had gone through.
"That sample was secretly swapped out in the laboratory before your insemination procedure," Dr. Evans confessed.
Rachel felt the room begin to spin as the terrifying reality set in.
"Who is my daughter's biological father?" she asked in a trembling voice.
Dr. Evans pointed a shaking finger at a photograph clipped to the very back of the file.
"The system connected Maddie to more than twenty paternal half-siblings across the country," he said softly.
Rachel stared at the black-and-white photograph of the true donor.
It was Dr. Adrian Vale, the legendary and highly controversial founder of this very clinic.
But what truly terrified Rachel was not the doctor's infamous medical reputation.

She recognized Dr. Vale immediately because she had seen this exact photograph before.
It was currently sitting in a silver frame on the fireplace mantle in Grant's mother's living room.
