Chapter 6 - The Ransom

"Move!" Dominic roared, grabbing Norah by the waist.
He threw them both backward through the shattered warehouse window.
They hit the wet gravel outside just as the building erupted into a massive fireball.
The concussive shockwave rolled over them, raining ash and flaming debris onto the ground.
Dominic shielded Norah's body entirely with his own.
"Are you hurt?" he coughed, pulling her up from the dirt.
"I am fine," she gasped, brushing broken glass from her white silk dress.
Dominic's encrypted phone rang loudly over the sound of the burning warehouse.
He answered it, putting it on speaker.
"Did you enjoy the fireworks?" Caleb's arrogant voice echoed from the device.
"The photo of your sister was a deepfake, Norah."
"Mia is perfectly safe in her college dorm room."
Norah let out a massive, shuddering breath of pure relief.
"Why did you blow up an empty building?" Dominic demanded coldly.
"To get you out of your impenetrable fortress," Caleb laughed.
Dominic's eyes widened in sudden, horrifying realization.
He hung up the phone and dragged Norah toward the SUV.
"They used the bomb as a decoy to draw my best men away from the estate," Dominic cursed.
They sped back through the city streets, ignoring every red light.
When they crashed through the gates of the compound, the perimeter guards were all unconscious on the lawn.
The heavy steel doors of the main house had been blown completely off their hinges.
Dominic drew his weapon and led Norah silently through the ruined halls.
They reached the underground vault where the syndicate's millions were kept.
Caleb was standing inside the open vault, holding a gun to the head of Dominic's underboss, Marcus.
"Drop your weapon, Dominic, or Marcus dies," Caleb ordered, his hand shaking.
Dominic slowly lowered his pistol to the floor.
Suddenly, Marcus began to laugh.
May you like
Marcus casually reached up and took the gun right out of Caleb's trembling hand.
"You really are an idiot, Caleb," Marcus sneered, turning the gun on his own boss.
