Chapter 10 - The Vow

Norah did not hesitate for a single second.
She stomped her stiletto heel squarely onto the detonator's fragile digital screen, crushing it completely.
The red numbers vanished, and the device was instantly rendered useless.
The nightmare was finally over.
The medics rushed Dominic to the estate's private medical wing, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Norah paced the hallway all night, wearing a borrowed sweater over her ruined wedding dress.
By sunrise, the lead surgeon emerged and confirmed that Dominic would make a full recovery.
Two months later, the Chicago port territory was firmly under the undisputed control of Russo Logistics.
The Russian syndicate had retreated completely after Marcus's spectacular failure.
Norah stood on the balcony of Dominic's sprawling downtown penthouse, watching the city lights flicker to life.
Dominic walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist.
He rested his chin gently on her shoulder.
"You look beautiful," he murmured against her neck.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
"Our first wedding was a necessity of war," he said softly.
He opened the box to reveal a stunning, custom-made diamond ring that perfectly matched her style.
"I want this one to be real, because I love you."
Norah smiled, turning around in his arms.
"I love you too, Dominic."
He slipped the new ring onto her finger and kissed her deeply under the night sky.
They were finally safe, powerful, and unconditionally devoted to each other.
Later that evening, the penthouse concierge delivered a mysterious black package addressed to Norah.
She opened the velvet box inside to find a silver locket that had belonged to her mother, supposedly lost in a house fire twenty years ago.
A chill ran down her spine as she opened the locket's clasp.

Tucked inside was a small, handwritten note written in fresh red ink.
The note read: "He isn't who you think he is, daughter."
