Chapter 4 - The Marriage Contract

Dominic reacted with lethal instinct.

He shoved Norah hard behind a massive concrete support pillar.

A suppressed bullet chipped the concrete exactly where she had been standing.

Dominic stepped out from cover and fired two rapid shots in return.

Two of the armed mercenaries dropped to the floor, clutching shattered knees.

Chaos erupted in the dark garage as Caleb's men scrambled for cover.

Dominic grabbed Norah's hand and dragged her toward a stolen civilian sedan parked nearby.

He shot the lock off the driver's side door and pushed her inside.

He hot-wired the engine in less than ten seconds.

The civilian car roared to life, and Dominic slammed his foot on the gas.

They crashed through the wooden barrier of the service exit and sped out into the pouring rain.

They drove for an hour in tense, heavy silence.

Dominic finally pulled through the iron gates of his heavily fortified suburban estate.

Armed guards immediately surrounded the vehicle to escort them safely inside.

Once inside his private study, Dominic poured two glasses of expensive scotch.

"Caleb is working for the Russian syndicate," Dominic explained, handing her a glass.

"They want my shipping routes, and they are using him to get them."

Norah took a shaky sip of the burning liquid.

"Why does he want me?" she asked.

"Because you know too much, and the syndicate knows you can be forced to testify against me in federal court."

Dominic set his glass down on the mahogany desk.

"I cannot allow that to happen."

He walked over to a hidden wall safe and spun the dial.

He pulled out a small black velvet box and placed it on the desk.

"Spousal privilege means you can never be forced to testify against your husband," he stated.

He opened the box to reveal a flawless, square-cut diamond ring.

"We are getting married tonight."

Before Norah could process the shock, her cell phone buzzed in her pocket.

She looked at the screen and felt the blood drain entirely from her face.

It was a picture message from Caleb, showing her younger sister tied to a wooden chair.
