Chapter 2 - The Stolen Shadow

Dominic immediately cleared the boardroom.

He ordered the Callaway group to leave his building without another word.

Caleb smiled one last time before walking out the heavy doors.

The red folder remained on the table like a live grenade.

Norah was physically shaking in the empty room.

Dominic walked over and locked the heavy oak doors with a loud click.

He turned around and stared at her with piercing intensity.

"Who is he to you?" Dominic demanded.

Norah gripped the edge of the mahogany table to steady herself.

"He is my ex-fiancé," she whispered.

"He ruined my credit, isolated me from my friends, and almost destroyed my entire life."

Dominic's eyes darkened with a terrifying, protective fury.

"He will never touch you again," Dominic promised.

He walked over to the table and flipped open Caleb's red folder.

The folder was completely empty.

"It is a bluff," Norah breathed, feeling a momentary wave of pure relief.

"No, it is a distraction," Dominic corrected sharply.

He pulled his encrypted cell phone from his pocket and dialed his security chief.

"Lock down the building immediately," Dominic barked into the receiver.

He hung up the phone and looked directly at Norah.

"Check your master encrypted drive," he ordered.

Norah rushed out into the anteroom and opened her locked desk drawer.

The false bottom of the drawer had been violently pried open.

The flash drive containing the true Chicago port ledgers was gone.

Caleb had not brought evidence to the meeting to expose them.

He had used the meeting to steal the evidence right from under her nose.

Suddenly, the building's fire alarm began screaming overhead.

Thick black smoke started pouring out of the ventilation shafts in the ceiling.

Someone had just set the sixty-fourth floor on fire.
