Chapter 6 - The Devil's Bargain

I stared down the dark barrel of the gun, my breathing completely steady.
I did not flinch or beg for my life as Daniel kept the weapon aimed directly at my chest.
I told him to pull the trigger if he truly believed I was a loyal part of my father's assassination plot.
Daniel studied my face for a long, agonizing minute, searching for any trace of a lie.
He slowly lowered the heavy weapon and placed it back onto the metal table.
He calmly confessed that his intelligence network had uncovered my true identity three days ago.
He knew exactly who my father was, but he also knew my father was a ruthless, heartless monster.
Daniel explained that when I kissed him to stop the poison, I proved my loyalty belonged to myself, not my family.
The intense, burning chemistry that sparked during our kiss in the ballroom was not entirely fake.
He reached out and gently traced the line of my jaw with his thumb.
I leaned slightly into his warm touch, feeling a strange, terrifying sense of safety with my sworn enemy.
He promised that together, we would tear down both Katherine and Vincent Marchetti.
We spent the next few hours meticulously planning our counterattack in the secure underground bunker.
We decided to publicly expose their treason at the upcoming underworld syndicate summit tomorrow night.
Suddenly, Daniel's encrypted secure phone began to vibrate violently on the metal table.
He answered it on speakerphone, expecting a routine update from Silas regarding the mansion's security.
Instead, a chilling, heavily distorted voice echoed through the small bunker.
The voice announced that Silas was dead and the Ashford mansion had been completely compromised.
Katherine had brutally taken over the estate using Marchetti mercenaries during the garage ambush.

The distorted voice demanded that Daniel surrender himself at the docks within exactly one hour.
If Daniel refused to show up alone, they would execute his innocent teenage sister, Mia.
