Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Deafening gunfire echoed violently through the concrete underground parking garage.

Heavy bullets shattered the outer layer of the SUV's ballistic glass, spiderwebbing the windows.

Daniel shoved my head down forcefully below the dashboard to protect me from the incoming crossfire.

He pulled a heavy assault rifle from a hidden compartment under his seat and kicked his door open.

He fired back with lethal precision, dropping two of the masked attackers instantly.

I refused to cower helplessly on the floorboards while he fought alone.

I grabbed the silver pistol he had left on the center console and rolled out of the passenger side.

I used the heavy armored tire for cover and took a deep, steadying breath.

I fired three rapid, perfectly aimed shots, taking down another gunman who was trying to flank Daniel.

Daniel threw a genuinely surprised look over his shoulder, clearly impressed by my flawless combat accuracy.

He yelled for me to cover him as he sprinted toward the nearest concrete pillar.

We moved together in perfect, deadly synchronization, fighting our way through the chaotic ambush.

The masked men quickly realized they were entirely outgunned and began to retreat to their vans.

Before the last van sped away, I caught a brief glimpse of the unique tattoo on the driver's wrist.

It was the undeniable crest of the Marchetti crime family.

My father had sent a professional hit squad to finish the job Katherine had failed to do.

Daniel grabbed my hand and pulled me toward a hidden service elevator in the back of the garage.

We rode in heavy, breathless silence down to a deeply buried subterranean safehouse.

The doors opened to reveal a massive, high-tech bunker fully stocked with weapons and medical supplies.

I noticed a dark, blooming stain of fresh blood seeping rapidly through Daniel's expensive white shirt.

I pushed him firmly onto a metal medical table and aggressively ripped his shirt open to examine the bullet wound.

As I began cleaning the deep graze on his shoulder, I knew I could no longer lie to him.

I looked directly into his eyes and confessed that my real name was Emily Marchetti.

Daniel did not look shocked, angry, or betrayed by my massive revelation.

He calmly reached over, picked up his loaded pistol, and aimed it directly at my heart.
