Chapter 4 - The Midnight Chase

Sophie stared at the horrifying image of her brother, her entire world shattering into a million irreversible pieces.

The sudden, heavy crunch of boots approaching the barn doors violently snapped her out of her shock.

Thomas stepped into the dim light of the stable with a cold, calculated smile on his face.

He was no longer the charming fiancé she knew, but a ruthless killer holding a silenced pistol in his right hand.

"I really wished you hadn't found that box, sweetheart," Thomas said smoothly, raising the weapon.

Sophie grabbed a heavy glass oil lantern from the wall and hurled it directly at his face.

The glass shattered against his shoulder, momentarily blinding him as oil splashed across his expensive suit.

She leaped onto Midnight's bare back with the agility of an experienced rider and kicked his sides hard.

The massive black horse surged forward, bursting through the rear wooden doors of the barn.

Wood splintered everywhere as they galloped out into the fading twilight of the estate grounds.

She heard the sharp, suppressed cracks of gunfire chipping the trees right behind her head.

Sophie urged Midnight toward the dense forest, hoping the trees would provide cover from the bullets.

They plunged into the dark woods, the branches whipping painfully against her torn wedding dress.

She thought they had finally lost him in the labyrinth of the forest trail.

Suddenly, a massive black SUV crashed through the brush and cut directly across their path, blinding them with high beams.
