Chapter 1 - The Standoff at the Altar

Sophie stood completely frozen as the warm afternoon breeze fluttered the delicate lace of her wedding dress.

She looked from her beloved horse, Midnight, to the pale, sweating face of the man she was about to marry.

Thomas let out a harsh, unnatural laugh that echoed awkwardly across the silent outdoor chapel.

He tried to step forward, but Midnight immediately reared up on his hind legs, blocking the path with a threatening snort.

Bernard, the old stableman, refused to back down as he pointed a weathered finger directly at Thomas's expensive watch.

"I know what I saw that night, and I know exactly who was wearing that silver timepiece," Bernard stated firmly.

Thomas clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned completely white.

"This old fool is suffering from dementia, Sophie, you cannot possibly believe him," Thomas snapped, trying to grab her hand.

Sophie instinctively pulled her arm away, a cold knot forming deep in her stomach.

Her brother Daniel had vanished without a trace three years ago, leaving a void that had never truly healed.

She looked closely at the silver watch on Thomas's wrist, noticing a tiny scratch on the bezel she had never paid attention to before.

Daniel had an identical watch with the exact same scratch from a childhood bicycle accident.

"Take off the watch, Thomas," Sophie demanded, her voice trembling but resolute.

Thomas narrowed his eyes, shedding the charming facade he had worn for their entire two-year relationship.

He lunged forward and grabbed her arm with a brutal, painful grip.

Suddenly, Sophie's cell phone buzzed in her pocket with a loud, intrusive notification chime.

She managed to pull it out with her free hand and glanced at the glowing screen.
