Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning

Thomas laughed cruelly, the orange light of the flames dancing in his psychotic eyes.

He demanded that Sophie hand over the USB drive immediately, or he would slice her mother's throat wide open.

He pressed the sharp steel harder against the terrified older woman's trembling skin, drawing a tiny drop of blood.

Sophie slowly reached into her torn, muddy wedding dress and pulled out the black flash drive.

She took a hesitant step forward, pretending to surrender the evidence to save her mother's life.

Suddenly, a massive, terrifying black shape burst out of the surrounding woods with blinding speed.

Midnight, the fiercely loyal horse, charged directly at Thomas with a deafening, furious whinny.

The massive animal kicked its front hooves squarely into Thomas's chest, sending the criminal flying backward through the air.

Thomas hit a brick wall with a sickening crunch, dropping the hunting knife as he fell unconscious to the ground.

Sophie rushed forward, picking up the knife and frantically cutting her parents loose from their heavy restraints.

Daniel and Claire secured the perimeter, standing over the defeated mercenaries as dozens of police sirens wailed in the distance.

The authorities arrived in massive numbers, completely surrounding the property and placing Thomas in heavy iron shackles.

The FBI immediately confiscated the USB drive, guaranteeing that Thomas and his syndicate would spend the rest of their lives in federal prison.

Sophie hugged her brother and her parents tightly, weeping tears of pure joy as the horrific nightmare finally reached a beautiful, happy resolution.

They all returned to the family estate the next morning, eager to begin rebuilding their fractured lives together.

Sophie walked into her quiet bedroom, exhausted but finally at peace, and noticed a pristine white envelope sitting perfectly centered on her pillow.

She opened the seal and pulled out a highly classified copy of her own recent medical records alongside a handwritten note.

The elegant, cursive handwriting was unmistakably Thomas's.

The note simply read: "I always knew you might win, which is exactly why I put the slow-acting poison in your morning coffee yesterday."
