Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Barn

Sophie gasped and shoved Thomas away with all the strength she could muster.

The wedding guests began to murmur in shock as they watched the bride back away from the altar in absolute horror.

"The wedding is completely canceled!" Sophie shouted, her voice echoing over the manicured lawns.

Thomas cursed loudly under his breath and turned to flee toward the guest parking lot.

Midnight stomped his hooves aggressively, making sure Thomas could not approach Sophie again.

Sophie hiked up her heavy white gown and ran in the opposite direction toward the old wooden stables.

She needed to find Bernard and ask him exactly what else he remembered about that terrible night three years ago.

The heavy wooden doors of the barn were slightly ajar when she arrived.

She pushed them open and stepped into the cool, dusty shadows of the stable corridor.

The interior was completely trashed, with hay bales violently overturned and pitchforks scattered across the dirt floor.

Midnight had followed her closely and began to pace nervously near the very last stall in the row.

Sophie slowly approached the stall, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.

She peered over the wooden gate and let out a blood-curdling scream.

Bernard was lying on the floor in a massive pool of dark blood, gasping weakly for air.

With his last ounce of strength, the old man pointed a trembling, blood-stained finger directly at the wooden floorboards beneath him.
