Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

The security guards dragged Naomi down into the basement of the hospital, tossing her into a windowless interrogation room.
She sat bound to a metal chair, her heart pounding as she waited for the actual police to arrive.
Ten minutes later, the heavy steel door swung open, and Elijah walked in alone.
His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated anger.
"How could you sink so low, Naomi?" Elijah demanded, slamming his hands down on the metal table.
"I never touched your son, Elijah, you have to believe me!" Naomi begged, pulling against the plastic ties.
She frantically explained everything about Marcus, the USB drive, and Cassandra’s illegal medical trials.
Elijah sneered, shaking his head in absolute disgust.
"Cassandra warned me that you would make up insane conspiracy theories to save yourself," Elijah said coldly.
"The USB drive is inside my coat pocket right now, just plug it into your laptop and look at the files!" Naomi pleaded desperately.
Elijah hesitated, his eyes searching her face for any sign of deception.
He reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the small, encrypted flash drive.
Just as he pulled out his personal laptop to inspect the drive, Cassandra burst into the interrogation room.
"The police are here, Elijah, you should not be talking to this psychopath!" Cassandra yelled, eyeing the flash drive nervously.
Elijah ignored her and plugged the USB drive into his computer.
The screen flashed blue for a moment, and a complex folder directory appeared.
Before Elijah could click on a single file, a red warning box popped up on the screen.
"Unauthorized access detected, initiating emergency data wipe," a robotic voice announced from the laptop speakers.
Cassandra had installed a remote kill-switch on the drive, and she had just triggered it from her own cell phone.
A countdown timer appeared on the screen, rapidly deleting every single piece of evidence that proved Naomi’s innocence.
Cassandra smirked at Naomi, victorious and completely untouchable.
"It seems your fake evidence just conveniently destroyed itself, Doctor Wheeler," Cassandra mocked smoothly.
Suddenly, the hospital intercom system crackled to life with a blaring, high-pitched emergency tone.
"Code Blue, Pediatric ICU, Room 412," the automated voice announced frantically.

Elijah’s face drained of all color as he realized Room 412 was Toby’s room.
Toby’s heart had just stopped beating.
